MANAGEMENT TIPS that I learnt from KSM SIR
(version 2)
I learned many life skills and management tips from my mentor, KSM. I owe him a lot.
I worked at M/s.Premier mills, HOSUR for 8 years. But my last 365 days or so, under KSM Sir was unforgettable.
He meticulously molded me from a clay to a beautiful statue (to use an analogy).
MY GATE PASS ERROR
Once our dot matrix printer was under repair. We had some urgent printing to be done. Since the HCL Engineer didn't complete it in time, I had to take the printer urgently in our company car to HOSUR (HCL Engineer's room) from our factory 12 kms away.
In the urgency, I forgot to fill out a mandatory form called, GATE PASS.
It declares many things about the machinery taken out -- like manufacturing serial no. model, taken out reason replacement or repair, person taking it out,
department (computer department) etc, etc.
It may be returned in a day or even after a month. At that time, an "INWARDS ENTRY" will be made in the gate. This will automatically cancel the "out" entry.
MORE ABOUT GATE PASS
Monthly, the security department will prepare a statement and get our approval and sign (that still so many machineries of ours sent for repair is yet to return).
There will be lot transactions in a month. Say like 4 terminals taken out by HCL Engineer one day and another 1 brought in. etc. on another day (meaning 3 is still pending with HCL).
I had taken out a printer for repair and it made an "OUT ENTRY" at the gate. But when I brought in, I "missed out" making an "INWARDS ENTRY" by the security people. This would cancel or get tallied with the out entry I made a few days ago.
Based on this negligence the company can issue a "SHOW CAUSE NOTICE" to me. And ask me to give a written explanation. It will be black mark in my career and it will be added to my personal file. Movement of machinery without proper recording is "almost" like a theft, as per company rules.
I think the paper was pending at my boss, KSM's table for a week or so. He knew that I am a honest person. At that time, GR or Mr. G Ravichandran was the GM or Unit Head. He knew about me too. But as an administrator he can't relax the rules for me.
On a particular day, my boss called me urgently. At that time, the company car was waiting to pick up, GR for lunch to the quarters. He was casually walking a few hundred metres towards the car. My boss KSM and myself followed him hurriedly.
KSM Sir was having the problematic gate pass in his hand. I understood the situation. When GR was about to open the car door, KSM Sir gave my GATE PASS to him. He has the authority to cancel the "SHOW CAUSE NOTICE" that was pending on me.
I was hiding behind KSM Sir, as if I were a school student. GR peeped at me and understood and signed the GATE PASS angrily telling,
"THERE SHOULD BE SOME SYSTEM, SATHIYAMOORTHY".
Then he slam shut the car door and it started with a mild zoom.
Immediately after that KSM turned towards me.
I told him, "I TOOK THAT SLAP, SIR".
The problem was amicably solved. Thanks to KSM Sir's exceptional efforts.
Thereafter, I never missed out any GATE PASS entry.
ABOUT MY TENURE AT PREMIER MILLS
I was the computer department head managing HCL HORIZON III under UNIX 4.2 BSD.
It was an advanced mini computer that controlled around 15 dumb terminals across the modernised textile mill. We also had 4 PCs. We had a super fast 600 LPM lipi band printer. It can print 600 lines per minute.
Two computer operators worked under me.
KSM was my boss. But he never acted as one. He was so friendly, that you can chat about any subject with him.
However, he used to subtly get work extracted from all his subordinates. And also motivate them to perform better.
I got excellently motivated by him and worked very hard, even after giving my resignation.
Generally persons who had given their resignation, will slow down in their work. And the management also will not enforce strict rules on such people.
BUT I DID THE OPPOSITE. AFTER TENDERING MY RESIGNATION, I STARTED TO WORK HARD.
I BELIEVE, TILL DATE NOBODY IN THE TWO HUNDRED ODD STAFF MEMBERS OF THE MILL, WOULD HAVE FORGOTTEN MY HARD WORK.
THE CREDIT, OF COURSE GOES TO KSM SIR. I OWE A LOT TO KSM FOR THIS.
